Kihei library announces free family events
Kihei Public Library will offer free programs for the family this month. Programs will be conducted in the children’s section.
All children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.
* “Discovering the Classics with Papa Lopaka,” 3 p.m. Wednesday. Children 6 and older are invited to join Papa Lopaka (Robert DeVinck) for a dramatic reading of the Classics Illustrated comic book of Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” There will be a brief discussion, question-and-answer session, and Lopaka will encourage the children to read the original book. This one-hour program will include light snacks provided by the Kay A. Edwards Memorial Fund. Papa Lopaka is a writer, English literature scholar and longtime reader of classic books.
* “Introduction to the Didgeridoo Workshop,” 6 p.m. Oct. 22. Wes (Forest) Hada, a didgeridoo performer and teacher, will discuss the background and history of this aboriginal Australian instrument, tell an aboriginal story, demonstrate how to play the instrument, and invite participants of all ages to play the didgeridoo in this 90-minute workshop. Hada has more than 17 years of experience teaching and performing throughout Maui with bands including Lost at Last and Jivatma.
* “Didgeridoo Workshop,” 2:30 p.m. Oct. 26. Join didgeridoo performer and teacher Wes (Forest) Hada, who will demonstrate how to play the didgeridoo, provide a lesson on circular breathing, and invite participants of all ages to perform together as a group in this two-hour workshop. Didgeridoos will be provided, and participants are encouraged to bring their own didgeridoos.
The Maui Friends of the Library is sponsoring both didgeridoo workshops. Contact the library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.
